AI in Financial Operations
Where it earns its place in a firm like ours.
The useful applications of language models in a financial firm are less glamorous than the demonstrations and more valuable. They sit in research, underwriting, operations, compliance and client communication, where the work is reading, structuring, drafting and checking large volumes of text against rules. Wesvel applies them in its own business and advises clients from that experience.
Research and diligence
Reading protocol documentation, audit reports, offering memoranda, filings and news at a scale no analyst can, extracting the facts that matter into the firm’s own templates, and flagging what has changed since the last review. The analyst still forms the view; the system makes sure the view is formed on everything available.
Underwriting and credit
Turning a borrower’s data room into a first-draft credit memorandum in the firm’s format, checking covenant compliance certificates against the documents, monitoring borrowing base reports for anomalies, and surfacing the questions a committee will ask. The decision remains a person’s; the preparation is faster and more complete.
Operations and compliance
Reconciliation exceptions explained in plain language. Trade and communication surveillance that reads context rather than keywords. Regulatory change monitoring that maps new rules to the firm’s policies. Marketing review against disclosure rules before a human compliance officer sees it.
What does not work yet
Autonomous trading decisions, unreviewed client advice, and anything where an error is irreversible and expensive. The systems are good at preparation and checking; they are not yet reliable enough to be the final authority on consequential decisions, and in a regulated business they should not be.
Practice
How Wesvel approaches it
- 01Use cases are chosen where the work is high-volume reading, structuring and checking, and where a person owns the final decision.
- 02Every system produces outputs in the firm’s own templates and shows its sources.
- 03Pilots are measured against the current process on time, completeness and error rate before any rollout.
- 04Anything consequential and irreversible stays with people.
More in AI Systems
- Legacy LLMs vs Open-Weight ModelsWhat hosted frontier models and open-weight models each do well, what they cost in money and control, and how to use both without being captured by either.
- Own Your DataKeeping proprietary data inside the firm’s perimeter, understanding what vendors may learn from it, and building retrieval so models use your knowledge without absorbing it.
- Training Your Own ModelsWhen to fine-tune or distill an open-weight model on internal data, how to do it without leaking it, and how to prove the result is better.
- Building Internal SystemsThe architecture around the model: orchestration, tools, retrieval, evaluation, monitoring, security and the infrastructure to run it.
- Governance and ComplianceModel risk management, human oversight, record-keeping, vendor diligence and disclosure for AI in regulated financial businesses.
