Settlement Rails

Moving value between banks, chains and venues.

A strategy is only as fast as the slowest rail it depends on. Wesvel’s settlement stack is built so that dollars, stablecoins and digital assets can move on the timetable the strategies require, through counterparties that are regulated for the purpose, with both sides of a trade delivering or neither.

Fiat

Fiat moves through banking partners chartered and supervised for digital asset activity, including state-chartered depository institutions built for the purpose and national banks that serve the sector. Instructions are standing and dual-approved. The book holds fiat at more than one institution so that a single bank’s operational problem does not halt settlement.

Stablecoins

Where a leg settles in stablecoins, the book uses issuers with published, regularly attested reserves and clear redemption rights, and holds them in the smallest size the flow requires. Stablecoin balances are an exposure to the issuer and are limited as such. The developing federal framework for payment stablecoins is tracked because it changes which instruments qualify and how they may be used.

Delivery versus payment

Bilateral trades with liquidity providers settle on a delivery-versus-payment basis wherever the counterparty supports it: through a settlement network that moves both legs atomically, a triparty agent, or an on-chain atomic swap. Where none is available, the exposure between payment and delivery is treated as unsecured credit to the counterparty and sized within its limit.

On-chain settlement

Transfers between custody and venues, and between chains, are governed by the custody policy engine and confirmed at chain finality, not at inclusion. Bridges are counterparties with limits. Gas and congestion are operating costs planned for, not surprises.

Practice

How Wesvel approaches it

  • 01Fiat settles through regulated partners on standing, dual-approved instructions, with more than one bank in the stack.
  • 02Stablecoin holdings are restricted to attested issuers and sized as issuer credit.
  • 03Bilateral trades settle delivery-versus-payment by default; residual pre-settlement exposure is treated as counterparty credit.
  • 04On-chain settlement is confirmed at finality and bridge exposure is limited per bridge.
