Cross-Venue Dislocation

Dozens of order books, one asset, many prices.

Digital assets trade on dozens of centralized exchanges, decentralized protocols and OTC desks that clear independently. There is no consolidated tape and no central clearinghouse. The same asset routinely trades at different prices in different places at the same moment, and the gaps widen sharply when volatility rises.

Why the gaps exist

Capital cannot move instantly between venues. Withdrawals take time to confirm on chain, deposits take time to credit, and every exchange has its own participants with their own flows. A large buyer on one venue moves that venue’s price before arbitrageurs can bring inventory across from another. Regional demand, fiat on-ramp constraints and venue-specific leverage all add persistent, structural spreads on top of the transient ones.

Closing the gap

The strategy buys where the asset is cheap and sells where it is rich, simultaneously. The trade is profitable when the spread exceeds the round-trip cost: taker fees on both sides, any withdrawal fee, and the inventory risk of holding the asset until the legs settle. Because most gaps close within seconds, the trade only works if inventory is already on both venues.

Wesvel maintains working balances of the traded assets and of settlement currency across a set of diligenced venues. Trades settle from those balances immediately; the rebalancing transfer that follows can happen at leisure, when fees are low and chains are quiet.

Stablecoin and fiat legs

Many dislocations are not between two prices of the same coin but between the dollar-denominated instruments used to quote it, one stablecoin trading at a discount on one venue, a fiat pair trading at a premium in a jurisdiction with capital controls. These spreads are captured the same way, with the added step of deciding which dollar instrument the book is prepared to hold and in what size.

Practice

How Wesvel approaches it

  • 01Inventory is pre-positioned so that arbitrage legs fill from local balances; the strategy never relies on a chain transfer to complete a trade.
  • 02Every venue in the rotation has passed counterparty diligence; the size of the working balance is the venue’s exposure limit.
  • 03Spreads are measured net of all fees and expected slippage before a trade is sent, and a trade that cannot clear the threshold is not sent.
  • 04Stablecoin exposure is restricted to issuers with published reserve attestations and is sized separately from crypto inventory.
