Deposit Tokens and Stablecoins

Putting a balance sheet on-chain, properly.

Tokenized deposits and payment stablecoins let institutions move value on blockchain rails with the legal character of money they already understand. Getting there involves reserve design, regulatory classification, custody, issuance technology and distribution. Wesvel advises institutions on each, informed by using these instruments daily as settlement currency and collateral.

Deposit tokens

A deposit token is a bank deposit represented on a blockchain: a liability of the issuing bank, transferable within a permissioned network, redeemable at par. It suits institutions that want programmable settlement without leaving the banking perimeter. Design questions include the permissioning model, interoperability with other banks’ tokens, and how the token interacts with the bank’s existing systems and regulators.

Stablecoin strategy

For fintechs and corporates the question is usually whether to issue, to integrate an existing stablecoin, or to use a white-label issuer. The new federal framework for payment stablecoins, with its reserve, disclosure and yield rules, shapes that decision. Wesvel maps the options against the client’s use case and regulatory position.

Reserves, custody and attestations

Where a client issues, reserve composition and custody, the attestation and audit program, redemption mechanics and the treatment of yield are designed to meet the applicable framework and the expectations of institutional holders, who read attestations before they hold anything.

Settlement and treasury integration

Integrating on-chain settlement into treasury: custody and policy controls, counterparty and venue selection, accounting treatment, and the operational runbooks that let a finance team move value on-chain with the same controls it applies to wires. Wesvel runs exactly this stack for its own book.

Practice

How Wesvel approaches it

  • 01Regulatory classification is settled with counsel first; the product is designed to fit it.
  • 02Reserve, custody and attestation designs target the standard institutional holders require, not the minimum.
  • 03Build, integrate or white-label is evaluated against the client’s use case and licensing, not a preferred vendor.
  • 04Treasury integration is delivered with controls, runbooks and the counterparties the firm has diligenced.
